Children's dental care

We love to welcome children to Stirling Dental Care, and to ensure their dental visit is happy and fun.

Diet

Children should be encouraged to eat healthily to give them the best chance to be healthy adults. Dental decay is a totally preventable disease.

Sugar causes tooth decay. Sugar is in both sugary drinks and foods. The more often a child has sugar drinks or foods the more likely they are to have decay.

Milk and water are the best drinks for children. Safe snacks are cheese, fruit and vegetables, or you could try breadsticks and crackers.

It is useful to know that on the list of ingredients, the higher up the list the sugar is the more there is in the product. Sometimes the sugar is shown as fructose, glucose, sucrose, or lactose.

Toothbrushing

Toothbrushing should be part of every child's daily routine.

Teeth should be brushed twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. In the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bed.

Children up to the age of seven should be assisted with their brushing.

To brush your childs teeth it is easier if you stand behind the child and cradle their chin in your left hand so you can reach both top and bottom teeth. Then allow them to brush their own teeth and remember to give them lots of praise.

A suitable toothpaste should contain 1000ppm fluoride and a pea sized smear is the current advice.

You should make sure that they spit out the toothpaste and do not allow them to rinse the toothpaste off the teeth after brushing as the longer the toothpaste stays on the teeth then the greater the benefits to the teeth.

Disclosing tablets are useful to ensure thorough cleaning.

Mouthwashes are of no extra benefit to children if they follow the SPIT DON'T RINSE brushing routine. Mouthwashes cannot replace tooth brushing.
